UCP MARJON CLIMBING WALL CONDITIONS OF USE
The British Mountaineering Council recognises that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.
We want you to enjoy climbing here safely so please read and abide by the following:
Being Aware of the Risks:
This may be an artificial environment but the risks involved are as serious as when climbing outside on a crag or mountain.
The climbing wall holds are checked regularly but they can still spin or break.
There is soft flooring under the bouldering walls, designed to provide more comfortable landing for climbers falling. However, soft flooring does not make climbing any safer. Broken and sprained limbs are common on this type of climbing wall despite the soft landing.
Climbing beyond your capabilities on any wall is likely to result in a fall. Any fall may result in an injury despite the safety systems in place to avoid it. You must make your own assessment of the risks whenever you climb.
Our Duty of Care:
The rules of the climbing centre set out below are not intended to limit your enjoyment of the facilities. They are part of the duty of care that we owe to you, the customer, by law. As such they are not negotiable and if you are not prepared to abide by them then the staff must politely ask you to leave. They have been asked to help keep this wall safe so please help them to do their job.
Your Duty of Care:
You also have a duty of care to act responsibly towards yourself and the other users of the centre.
General Safety
Please report to reception before entering the climbing area
All belongings need to be stored under the benches ensuring that the climbing area remains clutter free
Please stand away from the wall if you are not climbing, belaying or spotting
Climbing Wall users are asked to exercise care, common sense and consideration for others at all times when using the wall
All users should ensure that they do not distract other users of the wall particularly when they are climbing, belaying or spotting
Users are requested to be responsible by reporting any faults or problems with the wall, equipment or any questionable behaviour by other users
Loose chalk is not to be used in the climbing wall
Please do not place your fingers through the bolt hangers.
Please only undertake activities that you are signed off for. For example, please do not attempt to lead unless you have been inducted and signed off for leading.
If you would like to be signed off for additional activities (i.e. Top Roping and Leading) please speak to a member of staff about inductions.
When you are Bouldering & Traversing:
Please remove harnesses whilst bouldering and/or traversing
There is a maximum height limit on the wall. Please stay beneath this whilst traversing/bouldering.
The whole height of the bouldering wall can be climbed but do not attempt to climb over the top of the wall.
Please be aware of other climbers whilst you are bouldering/traversing particularly when you are planning to descend.
Descend by down climbing if possible. Please do not jump.
When you are Top Roping & Leading:
When climbing, please tie directly in to your harness using an appropriate knot.
Clipping in with karabiners is not permitted. Belayers must ensure that their belay device is attached to their harness with a locking karabiner and they are positioned close to the wall.
There are floor markings to indicate the maximum distance belayers are permitted to stand.
When leading you will need to use your own appropriately rated dynamic rope.
The insitu top ropes can be removed whilst you are leading but please ensure they are replaced after you have finished with the route. Ropes can be replaced either by using the tethers or by climbing an adjacent route. If you have any difficulties with this please inform a member of staff.
When leading all runners and both karabiners at the top should be clipped.
When you are Supervising/Instructing/Teaching a Group:
For the duration of your climbing session you are responsible for the safety and behaviour of your group.
Whilst your group are climbing please ensure that you are supervising at ground level.
Please ensure you stay within the remit of your qualifications throughout your sessions. For example, if you are not qualified to teach leading please do not undertake this activity with your group.
At the end of your session please leave the ropes ‘daisy chained’, return any borrowed equipment and let the reception know that you are leaving.
If you are Under 18 or Responsible for Someone who is Under 18:
If you are under 18, please wear a helmet whilst you are climbing. If you do not have one you can hire one from us.
Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult who will assume responsibility for their behaviour and safety at the wall.
