Being a small institution, UCP Marjon offers researchers easy access to colleagues working across very different discplines.  Such contact is encouraged through research events, some of which are open to the public.  Each year a series of public lectures features visiting speakers from across the UK as well as our own staff.  These are advertised on the University College's main web page and are open to all to attend.  The Centre for Professional & Educational Research organises regular research seminars.  UCP Marjon staff and postgraduate research students also benefit from a monthly discussion forum (Research Matters Forum) and an annual Learning, Teaching & Research Conference.  The resources below are from some of our recent research events.

 

The Hooker Lecture is an annual event hosted by Exeter Cathedral and University College Plymouth St Mark & St John in celebration of parish priest and theologian Richard Hooker, who was born in Heavitree, near Exeter.  

The 2011 Hooker Lecture: "The Archbishop speaks, but who's listening? The dilemmas of public theology today" by Professor Elaine Graham, of the University of Chester, offered a thought-provoking assessment of the role and potential of the church in 21st century society.  This lecture was held at Exeter Cathedral on the 16th November, and at UCP Marjon on the 17th.

The 2010 Hooker Lecture: For the 2010 lecture, held at Exeter Cathedral on the 3rd November and UCP Marjon on the 4th, Professor John wolffe of the Open University asked "What can the Twenty-first Century Church learn from the Victorians?"

General the Lord Guthrie of Craigiebank delivered the Lord Caradon lecture on 24 November 2010 at UCP Marjon. The Lord Caradon lectures commemorate the life and work of Hugh Foot, Lord Caradon and in particular his support for the work of the United Nations. Following a welcome by the Principal of Marjon, Professor Margaret Noble, Dr John Rea, Chair of the Lord Caradon Trust Lectures, introduced the speaker. Lord Guthrie then spoke on ‘The Just War: Moral and Ethical Considerations in Reaching a Decision to go to War’. Lord Guthrie described the notion of a ‘Just War’ not as a doctrine but a tradition. Drawing on a range of historical examples, he outlined the tenets by which war might, in certain circumstances, be considered justified.  The lecture can be viewed below.
