International Degree Preparation Programme

Introduction

The International Degree Preparation Programme is ideal for students who would like to study at the University College but who cannot yet fulfill all the academic and/or English language entry requirements. Students follow a flexible programme which prepares them for study at either undergraduate or postgraduate level and beyond. Students work on improving their competence in the English language whilst adapting to the conventions and expectations of a UK Institution of Higher Education.

The Pre-Masters programme has been specifically designed for international students who are changing disciplines, need to 'top up' their academic qualifications, or who need to improve their level of English, get academic skills, knowledge and confidence required to succeed in postgraduate education. It is open to students who have already achieved a 5.0 in IELTS (or equivalent).

The Academic English Preparation Courses. We offer two different levels of English pre-sessional courses. The Pre-sessional English courses have been designed to provide you with intensive English language support and to develop your study skills in English Language for Academic Purposes before the start of your academic studies.  At the end of your course, you will receive a detailed report on your levels of competence in all four skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing for Academic Purposes. This report will be based on the results of assessment of your performance and achievement during the course.

Entry Requirements

UG admission: To qualify for admission, international students must have successfully completed a High School level qualification.

PG admission: For students directly progressing from Bachelors degree study then the minimum entry level would be the equivalent of a third class degree.

For students who are 3 year diploma holders it would be expected that they would also have significant work experience (minimum of 4 years) post graduation, in a relevant field

  • The minimum language requirement is IELTS 4.5 (or equivalent).
  • The minimum language requirement for Pre-Masters level is IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent).
  • The minimum language requirement for Academic English Preparation Courses is IELTS 5.0-6.0 (or equivalent) depending on the course chosen.  

Applications are made directly to the University College and not through UCAS. We will only accept original documents or photocopies which have been translated into English certified as authentic copies of the originals. It is possible to apply for both the International Degree Preparation Programme and your chosen degree programme at the same time and if accepted a joint offer letter will be issued for the two programmes.

Module Information

Your modules will be taught through a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars, project work, presentations, guided independent study, research tasks and individual tutorials. In addition to time spent in the classroom, students are expected to undertake homework and private study, which is an important part of work at degree level.

Assessment for all modules is ongoing and continuous consisting of tests and assignments.

Fees and Funding

You will be required to pay a deposit first in order to register on a course and receive the Confirmation of Acceptance of Study (CAS) for your Visa application. Information on how you can pay your fees will be sent to you when you accept an offer to join the Programme.
