BA (Hons) Outdoor Adventure Education
Introduction
The programme aims to develop a broad based knowledge and understanding of outdoor adventure with an enthusiasm for outdoor learning. Graduates will gain knowledge, skills and ability to enter the industry and develop a mix of hard skills, soft skills and academic knowledge to underpin their work. The experiences listed are important as the programme aims to address the technical knowledge, specialist support, legal framework and environmental considerations which professionals working in the fields of outdoor adventure, outdoor education, outdoor recreation and outdoor activity management will need to take on board if they are to be effective. Previous experience, and a commitment to gaining further experience, provides a useful practical context upon which to explore the underpinning theoretical principles of Outdoor Adventure where students will be educationally challenged.

Module Information
Year 1
This year guides students through many of the outdoor adventure processes at a personal level. All students undertake at least two modules. These focus on developing an understanding of the field of outdoor adventure; personal practical skills in land and water based sports; personal, group and academic development through experiential learning; an understanding of the science of the self in the outdoors and gain a greater appreciation of the environment in which we work through practical field work and exploration.
Year 2
This year increases the level of academic skills, personal skills, group work skills and encourages leadership development. It focuses on responsibility, challenge, safety, sustainability, ethics and values. Students will be able to further develop their own leadership skills in outdoor sports. The themes of modules on offer will include such elements as journeys, group management, environmental management and creative outdoor study.
Year 3
This year allows the students to focus on outdoor adventure at a professional and organisational level. The place and value of the ‘outdoors’ will be examined in both formal and informal contexts. This may include work with special populations and an examination of specific programmes for particular client groups. All of which will enhance the understanding of planning, monitoring, review, facilitation, environmental awareness and judgement. The compulsory module allows students to examine their role as a professional practitioner in outdoor learning. All students undertake a dissertation allowing a greater depth of study into a particular area of personal interest.
