BA Sports Media and Journalism
Introduction
This programme is professionally accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC).
This course aims to address some of the key issues involved in the academic study of sport as an aspect of popular media culture and draws on perspectives from cultural and media studies, sociology and sport studies in order to do this. The course specifically aims to enable students to gain a critical awareness of the social, cultural, economic and historical contexts of sports media production and reception, and the important role of the media in framing sport and sporting events /activities. The course will also provide opportunities for students to develop a range of production skills in creative / practical work, still photography, video and new media / multimedia technologies.

Entry Requirements
Our typical minimum entry requirements for applicants with A levels/AS levels/BTEC is 220 points. Applications from students with non-traditional qualifications are welcome.
Module Information
1st year
Year one modules provide basic knowledge and production skills. Studying the context of sports organistions and sports broadcasting helps you to understand key concepts, ideas and debates. You will also learn to apply production techniques in a sporting context using video, photography, sound and new media and begin creating your own sports media products.
2nd year
A compulsory module looks at a variety of research techniques and approaches to information sourcing and provides you with the framework for advanced study. A further compulsory module on work based learning skills and approaches sets up your work related study for year three. There are a broad range of further options to focus your sports related media skills in journalism, new media, moving image or photography.
3rd year
Develop the application of your skills in a working context in the first semester with an eight week work placement. Follow this up with a range of theory or applied options in sports photography, webcasting for sports production or sports journalism (for example)alongside your dissertation. Here you can focus on a major piece of research on a topic of your choice. This can be an extended essay, or a combination of photographs, video or new media.

Sports related media is one of the fastest growing areas of media business. By the end of the course, you will have developed an understanding of the organisation of contemporary media and the role that it plays in shaping the social, political and cultural contexts in which we live as well as being equipped with a range of practical skills required to work effectively in the sports sectors of the media industries. The course is designed to train students in the key skills needed to work in the sports sectors of the media industries such as sports journalism, copywriting, still and moving image production, event management and promotion.
