BA (Hons) Linguistics and English Language
Introduction
Language is fundamental to human activity and interaction. We use language to pass on information and to influence the way people think and behave, to negotiate and to express our feelings and for ‘small talk’. Studying ‘language’ puts you at the centre of Academia, bridging Philosophy, Sciences, Sociology, Psychology, Education, History and more. It is a fascinating intellectual journey through a uniquely human capacity. You will develop a sensitivity to language that has a wide application and will benefit any career path you choose. You study in smaller, interactive and supportive groups which can adapt to your needs and special interests.

Module Information
1st year overview
The programme takes a ‘hands-on’ approach in all years, but year 1 in particular focuses on developing your practical skills, both on the speech sounds and grammar of English. You also sample every topic you study in later years in the Language in the World course. You also are trained in research and the collection, analysis and presentation of data of all types.
2nd year overview
You analyse conversation and interaction. We ask why English is ‘a language’, yet varies tremendously according to age, gender and social background, context and medium. We explore how children learn their ‘mother tongue’ so effortlessly, while adults struggle to learn a second language, and why stroke patients often lose language skills. You develop your grammatical and semantic analysis skills and start applying your knowledge to real data. You have optional courses in e.g. literature, education or psychology.
3rd year overview
You explore how language and the English Language arose and how it changes. There are courses on language testing and assessment, discourse, and linguistic theory. At this level you are more independent and also design and write up a study for you dissertation, under close supervision.

Career Opportunities
The course gives you expertise in spoken and written English language, which is essential for any profession that works with language, effective communication ,correspondence and documentation. Our students go on to a wide range of writing careers, in publishing, as well as in copy editing, proof reading, ‘plain English’ publication, translation and technical writing. There are many freelance and commissioned options too, as well as web publishing and many get jobs where good language and communication skills are needed, such as the media, hospitality and leisure. Of course, for those people who prefer administrative roles, or project management, a degree in English Language gives you a terrific edge in the job market, as you will have a fine-tuned awareness of the language and be confident with your writing.
One of the main career paths for our students is teaching. Our graduates do particularly well on PGCE and other postgraduate teacher training programmes. This may be in the UK or abroad, e.g. TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). UCP Marjon offers postgraduate courses useful in both of these areas. You can find information about the PGCE here , about the ELT masters here and here (Teaching Langauge for Specific Purposes).
The ELL Degree Programme also provides an excellent basis for taking your studies to a higher level. There are many postgraduate courses, in the UK, Europe and further afield, that will build on your expertise in any of the topics you study here, including phonetics, grammar, discourse, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and even more specialised areas such as Speech and Language Therapy or Forensic Linguistics.
