BEd (Hons) Primary Education
Introduction
With QTS, this course is designed to nurture and develop your enthusiasm for teaching children and will qualify you to teach children across Key Stages One and Two. The course offers opportunities for learning in many different ways and you will be encouraged to take an active part in developing your knowledge and understanding of what it means to become a teacher.You will come to understand the need for an inclusive learning environment to meet the needs of all children in our multi-faith, multi-cultural society. Central to this is the importance of developing your knowledge of and ability to deal with children with a range of special educational needs. An important part of your studies will be your work in school. The University College works in close partnership with a large number of schools. You will be supported by trained teacher mentors and University College tutors during your school placements.

Entry Requirements
Our typical minimum entry requirements for applicants with A levels/AS levels/BTEC is 240 points. In addition to University College entry requirements you will need:
- At least 15 days primary school experience gained over the last 2 years
- To be able to clearly and accurately communicate both spoken and written English
- Candidates must take part in an individual and/or a group interview with representatives from schools as well as University College tutors
GCSE Requirements
In addition to the general entry requirements, you must have grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics GCSE examinations or equivalent qualifications. You must also have a grade C or above at GCSE (or equivalent) in at least one science subject before application unless you are taking an Access to HE Diploma. Please note that Level 2 Key Skills in Application of Numbers and Communication or Certificates in Adult Literacy or Numeracy, are not sufficient to meet the entry requirements to a BEd programme.
Suitability Clearance
You will be required to:
- Provide a satisfactory CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) Enhanced Disclosure, related to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the Joint Circular ‘Protection of Children’
- Register with the ISA (Independent Safeguarding Authority), www.isa-gov.org.uk
- Register with the GTC (General Teaching Council)
- Meet the Secretary of State’s requirements for physical and mental fitness to teach as detailed in ‘Fit to Teach’ by completing an on-line medical questionnaire
Module Information
Year 1
The first year of the course is designed to introduce you to the primary curriculum and to begin to develop your skills as a student teacher. In order to understand children as learners you will be expected to consider yourself as a learner. You will make arranged visits to school in the first and second terms and undertake an assessed block school experience in the third term.
Year 2
In the second year, you will further your understanding of the many ways in which children learn. You will develop your understanding of the foundation subjects and RE, the core subjects and how to plan and assess the learning in these subjects. You will also study some of the important issues in primary education including the inclusive classroom and special educational needs. There is an assessed block school experience during this year.
Year 3
Year 3 is designed to consolidate your knowledge and understanding of children as learners and yourself as a learner and teacher, and will equip you with the skills you need to become an effective teacher. Studies will include the identification of an area for your own research which will form the first part of your dissertation, the completion of your dissertation, and an opportunity to engage in an area of special inerest. As part of year 3, we run an annual 'Challenging Stereotypes' conference which investigates equality and diversity issues students may face when embarking on their new careers. Your final asessed block school experience will take place during this year. There are opportunities to work in special schools and schools in London, Germany and Cyprus (Service Children's Education).
