Physics 1 Unit Subject Knowledge Enhancement

Introduction

The 10 day course is organised such that you:

  • make significant consolidation &/or gains in your knowledge and understanding of the physics concepts listed below

               - to a level sufficient to teach top set KS3 science (with extension available to individuals if appropriate):

  • develop your laboratory management - by modelling an approach that offers you the possibility of deploying differentiated practical work in your teaching;
  • learn about how aspects of physics can be taught at Key Stage 3.

Through effective and detailed expositon of the theory, the prism of How Science Works  and hands on exploration of a wide range of appropriate practical and other activities.

 

Concepts

Energy, including electricity, waves and radioactivity.

Forces and materials, including magnetism and electromagnetism.

Spaceship Earth.

 

Health and safety issues will be dealt with throughout the course.

Course Code / Duration

Duration

This course last for 10 full days from 16th July - 27th July 2012 consisting in total of 50 hours of face-to-face tuition. Each day will start at 10am and finish at 4pm with an appropriate break taken for lunch. This course is provided under the auspices of the TDA's Subject Knowledge Enhancement initiatives.

Entry Requirements

  • You must have been offered and have accepted a training place with an ITT provider for a Secondary Science course (PGCE, GTP, or similar graduate programme)
  • The offer you hold will be conditioned on successful completion of the Enhancement Course
  • You will have been referred to us by your ITT provider
  • You cannot be accepted onto the course if you have already taken part in a TDA funded Subject Knowledge Enhancement course

The emphasis is on active learning, supported by big picture resources for each concept area and two additional conceptual frameworks, and using strategies such as:

Fees and Funding

The course has been funded by the Training and Development Agency (TDA) so there are no course fees.  There is a tax free bursary of £400 which is paid at the end of the course.

UCP Marjon’s Physics Enhancement Course is designed to provide you with the confidence and increased knowledge to prepare you to undertake a full-time postgraduate course of Secondary teacher training.  The course is open to intending trainees from across the whole region.
