PGCE Secondary Religious Education

Introduction

This is a vibrant and stimulating course that shows you step by step how to become an effective and exciting teacher of Religious Education. This is supported by excellent Ofsted grades in our last two subject inspections where RE was awarded Grade 1.

The key to effective RE teaching is to make the subject relevant to young people with diverse backgrounds of beliefs and cultures. Everyone has values and personal beliefs whether they have a religious or secular upbringing; the challenge of RE teaching today is to relate to their experiences (Learning From) and engage learners to consider alternatives (Learning About). To ensure a vibrant and stimulating course, the emphasis will be on experiential learning using visitors from local faith communities, visits and active learning strategies as well as guests of local and national standing.

Career Opportunities

At Key Stage 4, schools have seen the impact of compulsory exam entry for RE in raising the school’s overall results and where subjects offer added value, schools offer more support.

At A Level, RE is one of the fastest growing subject areas. Our placement schools have a high employment rate of our student teachers who have earned a great reputation for their innovative teaching.

In recent years our student teachers have found employment locally but also across the country from Birmingham to London and in English schools abroad. RE is an ideal subject for ambitious teachers to fast track into the role of Head of Subject or Humanities, Strategy leader or pastoral management.

Additional Information

What our students say:

"I never really considered myself to be a religious person, but I loved my lessons. I had fantastic teachers which always helps. It was something to get passionate about. It tore down the way I looked at the world, and I started to develop a new perspective on life."
Dan Jacob, PGCE Secondary Religious Education

“After the humanities Access course, I completed an Environmental Science degree. This involved studying Ethics and included a project on Religion and the Environment, which enabled me to progress on to the PGCE RE course”.
Patricia Brophy, PGCE Secondary Religious Education
