PGCE Secondary Modern Foreign Languages
Introduction
The aim of this course is to enable student teachers to develop the personal qualities, knowledge and skills on which effective modern foreign language teaching depends. Delivered by both schools and the University College in partnership, it aims to develop a knowledge and understanding of modern foreign languages in the new National Curriculum and a critical awareness of the key issues relating to the objectives, content and assessment of modern foreign language teaching in secondary schools. It aims to ensure that student teachers are prepared adequately for the challenges and practical demands of their school experience and of their first teaching appointment. University College and school-based training is closely interlocked so that student teachers are offered a holistic training experience.
The course is organised in a series of 8 units or steps, the unit titles reflecting the developmental and progressive nature of the course:
- Awareness Raising (in primary and secondary school)
- Building Foundations (at University College)
- Fusion of Theory and Practice (half at University College and half in a secondary school)
- Application and Experience (first teaching practice)
- Reflection and Analysis (including working towards Masters level research assignment)
- Transition
- Development (second teaching practice)
- Launching (into the teacing profession as a qualified teacher)
We strongly believe that our student teachers benefit from sequenced, graduated training which cross-fertilize theory and practice as soon as possible. For instance not only will you be involved in schools from the very start of the course but you will also be teaching your own classes as early as November.

“I was employed for a month to go into school and experience school life. It was this positive, but realistic, experience that inspired and confirmed my decision to teach. I really enjoyed my studies at UCP Marjon, which is a very helpful and supportive University College.”
Linsey Spry-Benz
"I haven't looked back! I absolutely love everything about teaching and look forward to work every day. No two days are the same and I would not have it any other way".
