PGCE Secondary Mathematics

Introduction

The course prepares you to teach across the whole range of the school mathematics curriculum from 11 to 16, the core components of A level mathematics and at least one area of applied mathematics. This involves knowledge of the content, recommended teaching approaches and assessment requirements for the National Strategy and the National Curriculum for Mathematics. We will address how pupils learn, effective teaching strategies and models of pupil progression. As well as focussing on the main National Curriculum areas of number, algebra, geometry and data handling, there will be a strong focus on:

  • Problem solving
  • The processes involved in learning and doing mathematics
  • The use of ICT to promote understanding of mathematics
  • The development of pupils as independent learners and users of mathematics

Entry Requirements

  • Candidates with a degree in mathematics (or a mathematical discipline) are eligible for the one year course, as are candidates whose degrees comprise 50% mathematics
  • GCSE Maths and English (grade C or above) before application
  • An awareness of teaching mathematics in a secondary school, through recent classroom observation
  • Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Enhanced Disclosure
  • Meet the Secretary of State’s requirements for physical and mental fitness to teach as detailed in ‘Fit to Teach’
  • Clearly and accurately communicate both spoken and written English
  • Candidates must take part in an individual interview and/or a group interview with representatives from schools as well as university college tutors

Module Information

The course comprises professional and theoretical study of education with a central focus on teaching and learning in mathematics.  The course will prepare you for the academic requirements of the PGCE and the professional requirements of the Standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status.  Study/ training takes place in both University College and partnership schools across the South West. 

Most of your teaching will be with the pupils in the 11–16 age range and you may wish to exploit the significant opportunities to work with post 16 students.  In both areas of training (at University College and at school), there is extensive focus on subject knowledge, related pedagogy and pupil development/ learning.

Our student teachers have been outstandingly successful in finding employment at the end of the course and in their subsequent career progression. PGCE Maths student Dawn At 21 I left higher education to work in finance for three years.  After this family life took over and I completed a Mathematics Degree with the Open University.  When I returned to work I entered sales management. I enjoyed the job, but I became increasingly aware of conflicts with my values.  Several years later I entered psychiatric nursing. However funding within the NHS had reduced significantly and I was unsure about my job security. This led me to consider how my skills could be alternatively applied and developed further.  I have always enjoyed mathematics and had contemplated teaching when I was much younger.  I am now completing a PGCE Secondary Mathematics course at UCP Marjon. The tutors within the University, and mentors on teaching placements, are very supportive and helpful. I very much enjoy teaching and working with the kids. My days at school are busy, unpredictable and I am often required to “think on my feet”. I am grateful that the turn of events led me into teaching, and I look forward to qualifying.

PGCE maths student Chris I came back to an earlier ambition of going into teaching after spending the last six years working in magazine publishing and nightclub and festival events. I graduated in 1999 with a degree in Geology and Astronomy. I contacted UCP Marjon and found that my degree, alongside my study of mathematics at A level, qualified me for a place on the Maths Enhancement Course (MEC) at UCP Marjon as a route on to the Maths PGCE course.

PGCE maths student Rachel I had my son aged 17, took a year out from school, then finished my A levels (including mathematics).  I then completed a degree in accounting and finance.  I found accounting too clinical and went on to run a live music venue for 2 years. This was a fantastic experience but I only intended to be a short term distraction.  I wanted to work with people and spent two years working as an auxiliary nurse and then a further 2 years in a residential home for young adults with autism.  There was a specialist school attached for the residents which I became increasingly interested in, and decided that education was where my long term career path should lead.  I was offered a place on the PGCE programme at UCP Marjon conditional upon completing the Maths Enhancement Course.  It had been four years since any previous academic study and my degree only covered certain aspects of mathematics so my knowledge was rusty.  The course was an excellent refresher which gave me the confidence I needed in order to teach.  I am now on the PGCE course having completed my first placement and thoroughly enjoying the challenge.
