BA (Hons) Coach and Physical Education
Introduction
The programme harmonises the disciplines of sports coaching, physical education teaching and sports development, whilst preparing graduates to drive both coach and physical education developments forward both as a profession and an academic discipline. The aims of the Coach and Physical Education degree are to acquire the knowledge, understanding and practical experience of the concepts, theories and principles of coach education, sports coaching, teaching physical education and sports development/leadership. In addition, intellectual and practical skills are developed in applied aspects of these areas. Graduates from this degree are expected to gain employment in these fields, and also to become critical thinkers and independent learners.

Our typical minimum entry requirements for applicants with A levels/AS levels/BTEC is 280 points. Applications from students with non-traditional qualifications are welcome. A CRB check and ISA registration are also required.
Module Information
Year 1Modules embracing elements such as ‘Physical Education in the National Curriculum’, ‘The Introduction of Sports Science Principles, Fitness and Health’ and ‘Foundations of Coaching Practice’ are designed to increase your knowledge, skills and understanding in sports coaching and teaching physical education in schools. This will include practical teaching and coaching experiences with adults and children.
Year 2
Modules address learning processes in education,research and analysis in physical education and sport, whilst examining coaching theory and methods. Building upon the first year an increasingly ‘international perspective’ will be adopted within modules. You will also experience a placement module (including opportunities to work in the USA) which can be developed to suit your career aspirations.
Year 3
This year includes compulsory modules in ‘Leadership’and ‘Assessing, Profiling and Sharing Quality Provision’. You can also choose two modules to suit your chosen career path. Those students who are interested in teaching physical education in schools may choose a module which focuses on the competencies needed for teaching. Those interested in sports development may select modules addressing ‘Sport and Excellence’ and/or ‘Sport and Disability’. Sports coaches may choose ‘Performance Coaching’. The degree programme culminates in a 10,000 word dissertation.
