BA (Hons) Children's Physical Education

Introduction

This programme meets the Government’s ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda that underpins all work with children across a variety of different professions. It is also designed to meet demands for expertise in Children’s Physical Education at a primary level and to address the current health concerns surrounding a lack of physical activity. The programme is designedt o provide students with opportunities to explore,examine and evaluate the context of childhood from a variety of perspectives including educational, healthbased, physiological, psychological, sociological, cultural, welfare, legal, political, economic, philosophical and historical.

Entry Requirements

Our typical minimum entry requirements for applicants with A levels/AS levels/BTEC is 220 points.  Applications from students with non-traditional qualifications are welcome. A CRB check and ISA registration are also required.

Module Information

Year 1
Modules studied during the first year are designed to provide a strong grounding in physiological, psychological and sociological aspects of children and childhood and include Childhood in Context, Understanding Growth and Development, Understanding Health Fitness and Nutrition in Children, Understanding the Development of Fundamental Movement Skills, Inclusion and Diversity and Professional Values, Ethics and Legal Issues.

Year 2
In the second year a holistic approach is adopted. Modules explore learning through play and learning through the environment. Students will be working directly with children or a children’s services agency during a placement module and also during an action research module. These 2 modules are designed to give students an opportunity to gain work-based experience and to start to consider career options. In years 2 and 3 students will also take a second area of interest from the optional pathways.

Year 3
The third year allows students to focus upon their chosen career path through core modules, the dissertation topic and further development of the second area of interest identified above.

Career Opportunities

Students who wish to enter the formal educational setting as physical education specialists will be prepared for a postgraduate qualification (PGCE or GTP) leading to QTS in either primary or secondary education. Those students who decide that formal education is not their chosen pathway will be able to access a wide variety of other career options, e.g. coaching, sport development for children, health and fitness industry etc. There are a number of options for postgraduate study including; Early Years Professional Status (EYPS), MA or PG Diploma in Youth and Community Work or MA in Sports Development.

We offer short courses such as First Aid, Off-Site Safety Management, to complement your final qualification. The University College is also a Sports Coach UK Premier Site, allowing you to gain accredited sports related qualifications.
