Remembrance Day Service

Released: 11.11.09

Staff and students at UCP Marjon united to observe a two minute silence at 11am on Remembrance Day and to participate in a short service held by UCP Marjon Chaplain The Reverend Paul Thompson, held in front of the recently refurbished War Memorial Wall.

Pastoral Assistant Alison Jackson laid a wreath to remember all those who bravely fought in both World Wars and more recently for those Service men and women who are battling on the frontline in Afghanistan.

The Reverend Paul Thompson said “It was really encouraging to see so many students especially attend this Service of Remembrance. The two hundred and fifty two names on our War Memorial are all of students who lost their lives in the two World Wars of last century but there are many students and staff members at UCP Marjon today who know of young men and women involved in the conflict in Afghanistan. For them the service was particularly appropriate. ”

The UCP Marjon War Memorials stand proudly in the grounds at the heart of the University College. There are three memorials, which were originally situated in Chelsea, and moved to the current site when the Institution moved here almost forty years ago. There are two World War I memorials for the then two separate Colleges, St. Mark and St. John and a combined memorial for World War II.
