Celebrating Diversity - One Marjon!
Since our launch of OneMarjon in November 2008 when we had a whole month of raising awareness about equality and diversity issues, we have continued to promote equality and have now built a programme of events into our annual calendar.
Thanks to the Disability Implementation Group (DIG) we celebrated 'International Day of Disabled People' for the second year running through the first week of December 2011 through several events. We also marked Black History Month in October with a range of events such as showing productions of 'Albert and Equiano', displays from our archives and books in the Library featuring Black history or Black authors and running some competitions and storytelling events.
Under the banner of OneMarjon, we also have an ongoing programme of staff development to ensure that our staff understand the need for inclusivity.
If you would like to know anything else about OneMarjon, or indeed if you have any ideas for diversity events or dates we should celebrate please contact Lynda Tout, the Inclusion Co-ordinator at ltout@marjon.ac.uk.
Challenging Stereotypes Conference
Katherine Hamley, Senior Lecturer in the Primary Education team at UCP Marjon hosted the third annual 'Challenging Stereotypes' conference for 3rd Year BEd students in 2011 and is currently planning the fourth conference for 2012. It is always extremely well attended by students about to move on to their careers in teaching. The conference prepares students for the range of inclusivity issues they may face ahead, for example in terms of teaching disabled children, children from Gypsy/Traveller backgrounds and children from minority ethnic groups.
